¿CÓMO OBTENER LA MÁXIMA DURACIÓN DE LA BATERÍA?

Es sabido que en el plazo de tres años, normalmente, deberás reemplazar la batería del auto si pretendes mantener su performance. Sin embargo, hay algunos “tips” que pueden ayudarte a prolongar la vida de la misma.

Por ejemplo, las baterías duran más tiempo cuando se las mantiene cargadas por completo; y en el caso de climas fríos o estaciones como el invierno, por ejemplo, la mejor defensa es mantenerla cargada a full. En casos extremos, ayudará contra el efecto de la nieve y el hielo, a que durante la noche la mantengas cubierta por un nylon y algún trapo o pedazo de frazada encima; el nylon es para que el residuo de ácido de la misma no se coma la tela.

Cuanto más caliente está la batería, mayor eficiencia tiene el proceso químico que entrega cargas eléctricas en el momento del arranque. Antes, debíamos cuidar la altura del líquido electrolito que contenía cada vaso, pero en la actualidad, con las baterías blindadas, esto no es necesario.

Sin embargo, aunque mantengas el vehículo sin consumos aparentes, con los días comprobarás que su carga disminuye. Esto se debe a que tanto las memorias del estéreo, como las de la computadora de inyección, y la alarma, están permanentemente conectadas drenando parte de su carga en forma permanente. Esto te indica que deberás vigilar su estado cada 15 días si no utilizas el vehículo durante ese tiempo.

Mediante un voltímetro o un tester colocado en la posición de 20 Voltios de CC, puedes medir su estado simplemente colocando las puntas sobre los bornes; si está en condiciones, medirá 12,5 V. Si la lectura fuera de 12,4 V, aún permitirá el arranque del vehículo, pero eso te indica que está necesitando ser cargada.

NUNCA coloques el cargador sin haber retirado antes el NEGATIVO de la batería; si te olvidas, no sólo le estarás colocando el cargador a la batería sino a todos los módulos del auto incluyendo LA COMPUTADORA DE INYECCIÓN, la que probablemente deberá ser reemplazada, con el “dolor” que ello implica.

No hagas inventos raros y coloca siempre la batería que te indica originalmente el manual del vehículo, ya que viene especificada para el consumo del arranque y la correspondiente entrega de corriente. Mucho menos si se trata de un vehículo diesel, que requiere mayor corriente en el arranque además de un breve tiempo de elevado consumo cuando alimenta a las bujías de precalentamiento, al colocar la llave en la posición de “contacto”.

Puedes vigilar el sistema de carga (alternador y regulador de voltaje) verificando su medición para comprobar que mantenga correctamente cargada a la batería; en un auto nuevo, con el motor funcionando, deberás medir unos 14,2 a 14,5 voltios máximos en bornes de la batería, con las luces apagadas y el motor regulando, una vez que se ha recuperado de la descarga del momento de arranque.

En ocasiones puedes recuperar parcialmente una batería a punto de vencerse, retirándola del vehículo, aplicándole una portátil de 12 V en sus bornes y dejándola un rato conectada para que se descargue; cuando la lámpara bajó su brillo, es hora de colocarle el cargador de baterías. Le das una carga apropiada y luego repites la colocación de la lámpara, para descargarla.

Y así continúas en ciclos de carga y descarga, siete veces. Al final, con la batería completamente cargada, la colocas nuevamente en el auto y verás que todavía puede durarte unos meses más, y más todavía si utilizas el vehículo con bastante frecuencia de modo que no se descargue. Las placas se adormecen con el tiempo y se endurecen, por lo que los ciclos de carga y descarga las despiertan y estiran el tiempo útil de trabajo de la batería.
