Te comento un pequeño truco que me enseñaron en el curso que dan para obtener el carnet de conductor. Sabrás que la presión de inflado de las gomas tiene que ver con el desgaste y que además, se debe hacer una rotación al menos cada 10.000 km.
Vamos por la rotación: debido al peso distinto y a los desgastes desparejos, es necesario que rotemos las cubiertas, pero hay que tener siempre en cuenta que en los modernos neumáticos radiales no se puede invertir el sentido de giro original, porque te encontrarás con las cubiertas “cuadradas” y casi destrozadas con el peligro que ello implica.
Por eso, las que estaban atrás deben ir adelante y viceversa, pero siempre cuidando que no se invierta su sentido de giro, que debería ser marcado antes de hacer cualquier cambio. Lo que no puedes prever es el caso de que tengas que colocar el auxilio cuando se pincha una goma, por lo que es imperioso transitar lo menos posible con el auxilio, sólo lo necesario para llegar a una gomería.
La presión de inflado la especifica el manual del auto pero depende si vas a circular en ciudad o en la ruta; si cargas el auto, es mejor que levantes algunas libras; hay que evitar que las gomas rocen sólo con los bordes y nada en el centro (poca presión) y tampoco que sólo toquen en el centro y no en los bordes (demasiada presión). Esto tiene mucho que ver con la distancia de frenado; cuanto menor sea la superficie en contacto con el suelo, mayor distancia recorrerá el vehículo al frenar y más probable será impactar; también se presentará una falta de agarre en las curvas, lógicamente.
No es cierto de que si vas a viajar deberías dejar un margen de inflado porque el aire caliente en la cubierta la inflará; eso no es preciso y te desgastará rápidamente la banda de rodamiento. También la misma cubierta indica su máxima presión de inflado; el fin de semana, con tiempo, cuando laves el auto, es conveniente que te detengas un momento para observar qué valores tienen tus cubiertas.
Puede salvarte la vida y la de otras personas. Debes tener en cuenta que una cubierta desinflada parcialmente tomará mayor temperatura y el caucho interior se desprenderá, lo que representa en verdad, un gran riesgo. Hay una tabla que indica, además, el peso máximo que soporta cada neumático, y en la superficie externa figurará como 110T, 119T, etc. Esta información la puedes conseguir en una buena gomería o en Internet.
Si observas que alguna cubierta se está gastando despareja en el sentido de giro (se va aplanando en forma alternativa, perdiendo su forma circular, volviéndose «cuadrada») entonces sabrás que hay que cambiar los amortiguadores, porque esto indica que en ocasiones, la cubierta pierde adherencia al suelo y justamente la función del amortiguador es que nunca la pierda.
En cuanto al desgaste de la banda de rodamiento, se toleran 2 mm en cubiertas de auto y 1,6mm en las de moto. Si bien esto puede medirse con un calibre (vernier), con su parte trasera, es probable que lleves tu propio calibre en el bolsillo y no te hayas dado cuenta: una moneda de $1, ésa que tiene el centro dorado y el borde plateado.
Si mides el ancho del borde plateado con un calibre, verás que tiene un total de 2,7mm. Si colocas la moneda en la ranura para la lluvia de la cubierta, cuando se esconde la parte plateada, ya sabes que tienes más de 2,7 mm de margen, la cubierta está casi nueva; cuando veas la mitad, ya estás fuera de la tolerancia y te arriesgas a una infracción, o bien a que te rechacen la verificación técnica. Si ves toda la parte plateada, ya estás a punto de ver el aire dentro de la cubierta.
Tal vez no sabías que las cubiertas tienen vencimiento, cuatro años a partir de su fabricación. La fecha de fabricación viene en el borde junto a la llanta, y son 4 números; los dos primeros son la semana y los dos últimos representan el año, todo esto encerrado en un recuadro con las esquinas redondeadas.
Posiblemente mientras tengas dibujo, no se fijen en ese detalle, pero si están a medio camino de gastadas, es probable que lo revisen. Por eso cada vez que vas a comprar una cubierta, cuidado con las ofertas, porque sucede lo mismo que con los alfajores de oferta, pueden estar a punto de vencerse.
También la cubierta tiene la indicación de la velocidad máxima a que puede circular; más allá no es segura. Prácticamente todas las cubiertas superan la velocidad de ruta, 110 km/h, por lo que no deberías preocuparte si te mantienes en ese rango. Pero si te gusta la velocidad, y tu motor lo permite, deberías fijarte en dicha velocidad para saber si estás en condiciones de alcanzarla sin peligro.
Los números que señala la cubierta tienen relación, como ser, por ejemplo: P 265/60 R 18
P: para vehículos de pasajeros.
265: ancho de la cubierta en milímetros.
60: el porcentaje de altura respecto al ancho.
R: radial.
18: pulgadas de la llanta.
También tiene que ver la indicación: “Temperature A, o B, o C” a saber: A: neumático que trabaja a temperatura caliente, B: para zonas de temperatura normal, C: para bajas temperaturas.
Interviene además el factor de la tracción: “AA”, “A”, “B” y “C”, siendo AA la máxima tracción que indica que en suelo mojado esa cubierta tendrá la frenada en menor espacio recorrido.
Otro dato interesante es la indicación: “TREADWEAR” que se refiere a la rapidez con que se desgasta la cubierta, en cuyo caso un neumático con número 400 durará el doble que una goma con número 200.
Entonces, en resumen, como información sobre una cubierta, se dispone de:
Fecha de fabricación – Máxima presión de inflado – Tracción – Desgaste – Máxima capacidad de carga por neumático – Máxima velocidad – resistencia a la temperatura – Tamaño del neumático.
